New Jeeps vs the old Cherokee?

Of all the cars I've owned, my beat-up old Jeep Cherokee was the only one I had any real affection for. I loved that thing. It eventually died, and I haven't gotten another 4WD since. I'm thinking about it now, and I'm torn between one of the several new Jeep models, vs getting a good used Cherokee and upgrading it with newer parts. I loved the solid axles, rugged suspension, and very reliable I-6 engine in the Cherokee, as well as the compact size. Is there a new model that can compare?
 
nothing can compare to an old jeep xj

im never getting rid of my 89 cherokee limited
ive already spent $4000+ to keep it running
after owning it for 3 months, but now im good
for another 250000 miles

if you can afford to keep gas in the tank and new parts as needed,
id stick with your cherokee
its not the same owning a newer car
