I have had intermittent lower back pain for years...bend over to pick something up and "ouch"! It would hurt for a day or two, and then be fine for months.

On May 16, I got out of bed, and couldn't stand up straight, and had horrendous pain when standing/walking. For weeks after I couldn't even sleep through the night, because every time I moved the pain woke me up.

I started physical therapy on June 16. Nurabness and leg pain started around this time, but I have improved a little. I can sleep without pain, and as long as I don't do anything, I can be pain free.

Doctor wants me to have an MRI and see surgeon, and all signs point to a herniated disk.

Surgery is not an option I'm willing to consider at this time, neither are shots. I have a medication phobia which makes life difficult to begin with. I've taken nothing for my back pain. In the beginning I did try 800mg Ibuprophen, but it didn't even touch it, so I stopped. (Ibuprophen is one of the few medications that I can take without having a panic attack) I know, it's crazy.

The last 2 days I've been able to do a little more without pain. I was able to shop with my daughter for about a half hour on Thursday without pain--when Monday, 20 minutes in Wal Mart brought me to tears....so I see this as a significant improvement.

I've been doing a LOT of rest. I realize I can't go on doing nothing forever, but I've read that herniated disks can heal themselves over time in some cases. I'm hoping that mine is one of those cases.

I have to do some grocery shopping today...hubby is going with me to help, and I hope I can get through it without pain.

Oh, another thing...in the last 2 weeks, I've felt pressure dead center in my tail bone...right at the base of the spine. My PT said it has something to do with the disk pressing on a ligament? He said it's common. Anyone know about that? No pain, just pressure, like something is pushing right out of my back.

Hello and welcome to the board,

It's always a good idea to have a MRI so hopefully, you will know what is going on with your back.

Herniated discs can and do heal on their own. It can take quite a long time and you will need to be very careful with your body mechanics. You will also want to learn the appropriate exercises that will keep your back and core strong.

Remeraber to avoid any activities that require you to bend or twist and don't lift anything heavier than about a gallon of milk. If it is difficult to remeraber this, you can get an elastic "brace" that velcros around your middle section that you can wear when you are up and about.

My husband ruptured a disc 15 years ago on Christmas Eve. It took about 6 weeks for the pain to become tolerable. Eventually it healed and the pain went away and he has been fine ever since. He saw several spinal specialists and all of them said he was NOT a candidate for surgery at that point. To this day, he does his back exercises faithfully, every day. I joike that we could have a tornedo approaching the house, but if he hadn't done his back exercises and stretching, he wouldn't leave until they were completed. His discipline pays off though. I'm the one that ended up having spinal surgery.:(
