In Ireland, they have changed their ratings system and have decided to add more classifications. An interesting point to note is that they no longer rate a film higher if it contains one strong swearword or sex scene. They look at the film as a whole and if it justifies the context of the film, it will receive a rating based on the film overall. So a film with strong language in it won't necessairily get a 15 rating straight away.
The new ratings are as follows:
G - (Same as UK's U) - Suitable for everyone,
PG - (Same as UK's PG) - General viewing but some scenes may be unsuitable for younger children,
12A - (Same as UK's 12A) - Stronger content but children can see if accompanies by an adult,
15A - Same principle as Irish 12A, but allows even stronger voilence, swearing or nudity / sex than a 12A film would, and children can see if accompanied by adults,
16 - New classification. Equivalent to UK's 15, but will allow stronger language / sex / violence than a UK 15 would,
18 - No restrictions on the films content, but may be cut or banned if it would be likely to cause persons to commit a crime, if it would be likely to stir up hatred against a group of persons on account of their race, colour, nationality, religion, ethnic or national origins, membership of the travelling community or sexual orientation, if it would tend to deprave or corrupt because it is obscene or indecent, if it depicts acts of gross violence or cruelty (including mutilation and torture) towarRAB humans or animals.
How do you think these measure up to the UK's ratings? If you want to see the new logos that have been introduced for these ratings, and also what new films have been given what rating compared to the UK, check their website - www.ifco.ie
