Something is broken on my bike but i have NO idea what its called.. so ill try and describe it

Its on the left handle bar and has HI and LOW written on it. In between the HI and low are tiny little marks (around 10?) there used to be a trigger/bar you could move between the HI and low markings. Unfortunately the trigger/bar has snapped off. I have no idea what it does either lol its stuck in between at the moment. While i can ride the bike 100% fine.. I would still like to replace it. Any one know what its called?
I havtn used the bike for a few years and think it just got broken off while in the shed.
Is there anyway this can be replaced? Its a bit of a crappy bike. i belive the brand is Apllo excel
