Hi all,

I have been sifting thru all these links and information. WOW! I guess my pain has never been bad enough or i have never felt desperate enough to really dig deep here.

I have gone on and off for 10 years now with back pain. Sometimes a terrible pain that pretty much stayed in my lower back region. I am sure you all know the tightness that makes you walk crooked. Anyway, i could usually go see the chiro and be better after a few days.

Well, last Sunday I went out for a run and slipped on some ice. I fell right on my butt and lower back. Since then things have changed dramatically. I have all these new and surprising new pains.

At first is was the normal back pain on my left side. Then i got these huge painful knots on the upper left and right sides of my butt cheeks. I got cracked again and a deep massage. The knot on my right side is gone. BUt the one on the left... yikes.

But the worse part is, my back pain is almost non-existant. But the pain in my hip is fierce and when i walk around for more than a few minutes the upper front part of my left left gets so painful i can barely move. When i lie down the pain in the front of my leg goes away, but the hip pain will not fade no matter what i do. I also notice a weakness in my left quad now when clirabing stairs and such.

My problem has also been a couple bad discs. (L5 and L5a?? cnat remeraber for sure, i know the L5 part)

It all seems odd to me, if it was sciatica wouldnt go down the back of my leg? Any advice? I assume this fall i took just inflamed my problem worse than normal. But with all these new pains and the fact that i cannot get any relief scares the hell out of me.

I am 6'3", 185 pounRAB. I do Ironman distances triathlons and have thru all the aches and pains thru the years related to my back. I read what so many of you suffer from and it is realy terrifying.

Hi - I notice that you posted in 2007 about your back problems, and many answered - almost all advising you to see a spinal specialist. Did you ever see one? I, too, have had back problems on and off. The last time I got sciatica from trying to do something which should only be done by a person in great shape and also experienced! I went to an orthopedist, who ordered an MRI. The MRI showed degenerative disc disease and other things. On his advice, I tried Physical Therapy. The pain continued to be so bad, especially on my right side, that my ortho gave me epidural steroid injections. After three of these injections the sciatica disappeared, and gradually my leg became stronger. Injections may or may not help you, but you really should take the advice of the other posters (2007) and find out from a spine specialist what is causing these flareups, if you have not already done so. You have already tried a chiropractor, which apparently isn't working. Good luck! :) Mabent

Hiya Kmantei.....

If you are experiencing more pain and pain you didnot have prior to your fall, perhaps you have more damage. Or you have more imflammation from the fall. You need to get to a doctor and get yourself checked out. My opinion is, donot allow a chiro to do adjustments as that might could cause you more damage. Now that is just my opinion but.....I wouldnt do it. Your hip pain most certainly could be coming from your bad disc issue. I suffered with my hip hurting too. < I am in recovery from a ALIF surgery on L4-5 and L5-S1> Let me explain what that is incase you donot know. ALIF surgery is Anterior Lurabar Interbody Fusion. Instead of being cut on your back for the fusion, the doc does the incision on your lower abdomen. I, too, had suffered many years before things got to the point of having a fusion. So far, I am so glad I did. I am somewhat early in recovery but out of the pain I was having prior to surgery. I am 47 years of age. Not that it matters......young people too can have disc issues. But after suffering for years, I had some pretty bad off disc. I just didnt want a fusion ugh..... I had a slight nerve impingement. I went through all the epidural injections and other procedures before my fusion. The injections did help my leg pain. I had some major imflammation in my back. After my fusion, I had a severe nerve imflammation happen. Severe enough that it landed me right back into the hospital. It was in my sciatic nerve < they called it S1 radiculopathy at the hospital> . Very, very painful. The pain was in the back of my right leg. From my hip down to my foot. Very painful. I also had major weakness in my legs. I was hitting the gym < before my surgery of course> 5 days a week trying to strengthen my legs. UGH It just seemed the more I did at the gym, the more weakness I had. It was very frustrating.

My suggestion would be to go back to your doc...and seek his attention. If you are not getting relief, your doc can recommend doing things such as the injections to get you some relief. It doesnt always mean surgery. I did everything under the sun before resorting to a fusion. But I will add, I for sure donot regret having my surgery. It is wonderful to wake up and not have the same pain I was having. I just have surgical pain now :) And that will all fade away with time..... I hope I helped a wee bit. Hopefully others will offer their experience or advice as well. Many many good people here on this particular forum..... good luck to you and if you have more questions....feel free to ask!

I did go see a neuro surgeon Mabent and I forgot about posting in 2007:) I have had a couple MRI's both showed the same thing, two degerated discs and a bulging disc. I dont have all the info in front of me. I probably quit looking here because i went so long without any problems at all. Anyway, thanks for the advice. I will go look at the older post.

Hi - I agree with Lynn when she says that you may have something different or additional - caused by your recent fall. If you make an appointment with the Orthopedic's Assistant, you won't have to wait as long. He/she examines you and, if he feels that you can be helped, you will be able to get a quicker appointment with the Orthopedist. You could make the appointment, then see your chiropractor if you feel he can help. If the chiro helps, you can cancel the appt. with the Ortho! I was assuming that you were at your wit's end and needed advice about what to do next. :) Mabent

I think you need to have a current MRI done and have it compared with the prior ones. That way you will find out if anything has changed and if so what (and what the treatment options may be).
