And they wonder why piracy flourishes. The problem with cinema companies, is that they're not embracing the new technology. Most cinema's you go in even newly built ones, still use film, and not digital technology. Therefore, the film prints cost more money to make, which means they're more money to rent, so there is less money for the cinema to make off each ticket.Incorporate that with the location costs and that's why the tickets are so high, in some places. If they would only honour their contract and truely deliver that experience, then they could make their prices most realistic and still keep the shareholders happy

Trouble is the exhibitors won't commit to the costs on digital projection yet because the technology is evolving all the time.

All the 1.3k digital projectors installed in the Toy Story 2 era are now obsolete, second generation 2k models are now being phased out in favour of 4k models. Why invest money in equipment thats going to be boxed up and collecting dust in a years time.

We have two multiplexes in our company that have digital projection in every screen. Each multiplex has a different setup so we can trial what works best, which manufacturers have the best technical support etc.

The major problems are cost: A 35mm equipment setup costs a fraction of a digital setup, and availability: only around 50-60% of released films are available digitally.

Incidentally, film hire costs are not based on the format (35mm/digital), but what kind of deal the distributor hammers out with the exhibitor. Usually the distributor just says "we want XXX% of the sale price of each ticket sold." They don't care that it's cheaper to whack a film on a harddisc rather than print it on polyester, they just want the biggest return they can get. If the cost of printing film IS an issue to the distributor (indie companies etc) then they only print 30 copies, and cycle them cinema-to-cinema as limited release, rather than print 300 and give a saturation release.
