Net Calories? Help please?

Okay well I've been counting calories for about a week, trying to loose some weight.
With my height and weight and fitness goal, it is recommended i eat 1291 calories a day.
So everyday I meet that, or am a little bit less. Today I had a basketball game and a basketball practice, which in total burned about 408 calories. This means that my net calories for today is 864.
Is this a good or bad thing? Will it help me loose weight? Can someone please explain what it means?
