I was trying to cut through plastic package and the knife went right into the base of my left ring finer. It was small maybe half an inch, but deep, I could see the tissue. But the next thing I noticed was that that finger was numb, actually more like a tingly feeling when you foot falls asleep. I went to the ER and they said that I must have hit and damaged the peripheral nerve and now I have what they called paresthesia. I asked if the damage was permanent, if i would regain sensation and they said only time will tell. Can anyone tell me more about this paresthesia? What nerve is in that location? How might I have damaged it? Will this be permanent? I can't feel any touch to the skin but I can feel pressure if I squeeze it. Also, when I make a clenched fist there is a searing, staby uncomfortable "zapping" sensation in that spot where the cut is. Sorry for such a long question, any info would be great.
