Durab question most likely, but when you speak of "nerve block" are you speaking of a cortisone shot (steroid) or something else?

The nerve block usually also involves injecting a steroid and an anesthetic into the epidural space. It can be diagnostic and may also cause pain relief for a period of time. I had a nerve block done at L5 but they had to know if they were in the right area, so when they did it, I had no anesthetic and no twilight sedation..I almost went through the roof. But once they found my extremely painful area, they also nurabed it and injected a steroid. Luckily for me, it did give me pain relief and the pain from the block only lasted briefly until I was nurab.

In my situation they know right where the pain is due to me having surgery and coming out of it with severe nerve root damage at S1. So they could just nurab it and go for it I hope. I was told that I would have to go to an anesthesiologist to have it done. Is this common practice? If so why?

Thanks in advance for any help!

They want to verify that this is indeed the culprit for the pain. Specifically that s1 level is the causing the pain. I had this done before my fusion surgery. Sometimes they will try to block the nerve so that it is unable to communicate with the nervous system and it resets the nerve sensitization. Not sure if I have the explanation exactly perfect.

bay breeze,

I can somewhat relate, although my medial branch block injection I was completely knocked out and suffered no illeffects other than I didn't get any relief from my normal pain, nor any gain in mobility and still used my cane, and scooter.

However, when I went into the discography this past Aug. 27th, so I had some minor nurabing agent (so they said) when they put in each of the 4 pins in my back and used the contrast dye (BOY DID I FEEL EVERYTHING!!!) I was originally under the impression that I would be alseep, then they wake me up, so that the could mimic my pain. However; upon arriving to the hospital and talking with the doc they explained that this would not be the case. They did tell me though I would not like either one of them during this procedure, and quite frankly is my exact thoughts. Actually to the point they had asked if they could put in another needle to do a comparison ( I told them no and that I was spent and in extreme pain). I did however found out that they were able to confirm 3 bad discs in my back and seeing where to go from here. They originally thought decompression surgery and now saying discectomy will find out more when I see him on Wednesday.
