Curiosity Killed the Cat

I plugged my SD card into my computer, and the computer wouldn't read it. after taking it out and putting it in the computer again, it still wouldn't read that the card had been plugged in. i didn't even get the little sound saying something has been put in. the computer says i have to format the disk before i can use it, but i have important files on there and formatting will erase everything. so i tried putting it into my phone in the hopes of saving everything to my phone and transferring it later. now my phone won't even read that the disk is inside. it's getting to be very frustrating. does anyone have any suggestions? thank you.
