Maybe the idea is to show how history affected geography. Not that the continents, oceans, and islands have changed; but the nations and states that occupy them have.
For example, Hawaii was a kingdom until some Americans stepped in and turned it into a US territory. Arizona has a slice at the bottom that we purchased from Mexico (Gadsden, I think). Alaska was purchased from Russia. Of course there is the Louisiana Purchase that comprises several current states.
Poland is a country that has shifted its boundaries due to war. There are some islands north of Japan that were confiscated by Russia at the end of WW2.
The country of Timor Leste was very recently wrested from the control of Indonesia. Papua New Guinea is on an island that looks like it should be a single country, but due to colonialism it has been cut into two parts -- one independant, the other a province of Indonesia.
Bolivia used to have access to the Pacific but lost it in a war with Chile.
Could this be the sort of thing she wants?
