Hey Doc, sorry for the delay....

The Slipper Clutch.....well, there was quite a debate a while back about this little upgrade....even though several bikes now come stock with them, several people really dislike the idea of them, and think that they only need to be on the track.

I'm not one of those people. Depending on how many V or L twins you've ridden, and how comfortable you are with the enormous engine braking associated with the twins the Slipper can be a great friend. I've got all twin motorcycles...and am very used to the engine braking, and I like it and can use it to an advantage of sorts. Thing is though, whenever I would let anyone unfamiliar with the twins ride one of my bikes, I'd be very clear about how to ride a twin, and where to expect things to be quite different than a four. Like slow corners....downshifting, and slow take offs.

The slipper clutch is just one more tool, that can really save your ass. If you downshift to say 2nd when it should have been 3rd....you release the standard clutch and the bike will engine brake super hard, where you'll more than likely get wheel chatter or hop. This is not a good thing!!! And can cause a loss of control. With the slipper, it releases the clutch until the revs of the motor and the rotation of the wheel are a closer match....result, no chatter no wheel hop....(and a cool noise). It will also release in most "lugging" situations like too slow around a corner, or with a crappy slow take off. These really are only an issue with beginners...but it does help them a ton. I really liked mine (once i got used to it) and I can say that I would really love it on a track. But it still has quite a few positives for daily riding.

The only negative from my perspective, is that many riders are afraid of their brakes, and/or they don't know how to use them properly. Since the Twins engine brake so well....there is very little brake needed in many street situations where you can use your engine to help control the speed of the bike. So, if a rider is accustomed to using the engine for a brake, they will get a big surprise when they have a slipper clutch b/c nearly all of the engine braking is gone. Translation, either know how to brake your bike or look the hell out! However, to an average to good rider and beyond, this wont be a problem and the positives far outweigh the negatives.

Not to beat a semi-alive horse but, if you're getting a base I honestly think the first mod I would do would be wheels. I know I've said it over and over....but lighter wheels is the single best performance mod that you can do to your bike. Second would be an adjustable dampner (especially if you track the bike, or wheelie the bike) Third, would be the Slipper. Just my opinion!

And CONGRATS man....you will NOT be dissapointed
