Need to replace the "Computer Module" in my '02 Dodge Caravan?

Was told by mechanic Need to replace the "Computer Module" in my '02 Dodge Caravan $900. Is this a super-essential item? Or what am I looking at if I don't replace it right away? Would I be able to travel with it like that? Someone that knows a little more about this please let me know!
