Need to buy a unlocked phone. Can I be sure that my 3G card will be compatible?

My recent LG shine has bit the dust. My carrier is AT&T and I've got a while left in my contract.

I'd like to buy an unlocked phone off eBay b/c it looks like that's my cheapest option, plus there's more choices. Should my 64K 3G SIM card work with most any new phone? How can I determine this?

If not, does any one have any recommendations on what I should do?
 
I have a brand new unopened HTC Hero (Telus branded) that can be unlocked, and works with the AT&T 3G network. This isn't a European model, it is from Canada. All you need to do is buy an unloack code for it and it is good to go (usually less than $20). I have the black or white one.

Let me know if you are interested, I've heard it is an amazing phone. It has Google's new turn by turn navigation software too :)
