Need some1s advice of overheating in cars!?

Ok..i have a 1996 gl taurus...and its over heating...i just got a tempature sensor placed in it but it still heats up!!...someone told me that i might need a new thermostat and i bought 1 i just didnt put it in..would that be the problem??...and the fan comes on when the car start up...do u think i might need to replace the fan?? or is something electrically wrong with the car....i would turn the heat up all the way too..to slow down the overheating....if you have any advice please offer some..thank you
