Need some help bout this iphone?

I found an iphone, dont know who it belongs to and it was in a different city (not even close to where i live). Im pretty sure its a 3g. Im plannin on sellin it. its password locked. What steps do i need to take to make the most out of the sale. I heard i can system restore it on the cpu. What does the simcard do. and what is this thing about unlocking and jailbreaking it, and how do i do it? thanks
