Hi, and welcome to the forum. I'm sorry your husband is going through this. What kind of dr. ordered the MRI? Do you have the report that breaks it down for you as to what is wrong exactly or did the dr. just explain it somewhat?
The dr. you saw should refer you to an orthopedic spine specialist or a neurosurgeon who specializes in the spine. Mimgress is right about that. They are really the best and only doctors who should treat your husband. I personally use the ortho spine specialist after a couple of bad experiences with neurosurgeons, but that is just my own preference. At any rate, your husband neeRAB a dr. who will sit down and explain just exactly what is wrong, how severe or inconsequential it is, and offer options as to treatment.
Certainly, if surgery is urged, get a second opinion. It's not good to be pushed into surgery and unless there is severe nerve impingement, there could be conservative ways to treat the problems. However, ddd can not be cured or fixed, I'm sorry to say.
I hope you will feel free to continue to post and ask questions and just look for support from this great group
