I've decided to take up hiking after enjoying it with a friend. However i used his gear and i would like to know the best type of equipment such as rucksacks, jackets, boots, fleece etc...

Getting the best equipment is going to be expensive for something that you enjoyed on one outing - if the next one is cold, raining and foggy then you might not enjoy it so much, however...

Hiking is great and I am glad you enjoyed it.

The basic kit that you will need is a waterproof jacket, some footwear to walk in and and a bag to carry things (such as your lunch) in. The rest you can get over time.

Jacket - well go to an outdoor shop and you should be looking for a "breathable" fabric, that means that when you sweat the sweat can get out but the rain won't get in. These might cost from £50, but you don't just have to wear it for walking - get one that you can wear anyday and they can be quite good value. Some jackets include a fleece as well, which can be handy now the winter is coming. Fleeces can be relativly cheap though one with a matching waterproof so they can be zipped together is a good idea.

Footwear. This depends on where you are going to be walking. MOst important you need them to be waterproof with a decent grip on the sole. If you are going up hills then walking boots with ankle support are recomended. If you are doing low level walks you could get walking shoes instead.

Rucksac to carry things in, pick one that is mostly waterproof and 30 litres is good for a days walk.

Apart from that, ask your friend to go with you and show you what kit you can buy and where in your local area - your friend will know your budget and what and where to get the best stuff I think for the walking you are going to do together.
