All,

I am looking for a phone (for a relative) that has the following features:
excellent "standby" battery life (doesn't need to be recharged every day)charging via USB or a cheap / generic charger (like Nokia)slide-out QWERTYno touch-screensavailable used for around $150 or lessWIFI is a bonus
This is for use on Fido in Canada.

Please send your suggestions -- thanks!

You can convert a used smartphone for that use. Once you take off the data connection, an HTC Windows Mobile or Android smartphone can have a long battery life. Just consider the touchscreen as a bonus.

Any models in particular to look for (that come in under my $150 limit)?

Really trying to stay away from touch-screens -- the user (a family member) wants to dial by pushing buttons, not a screen.

Right now I am leaning towards an older Blackberry Pearl (without Blackberry service). At least then you get a sort-of-QWERTY, a pretty reliable phone, and (should be) good battery life. But I'm never sure about that.

Which smartphones have a reputation for really long battery life?

You are going to want to check to see if the user's provider requires a BlackBerry data plan with that BlackBerry before purchasing. Some do, some don't.

The idea would be to just get a used, unlocked Blackberry Pearl, and slip the SIM card in. No worries without BIS -- you just don't get e-mail. But BB still may not be the best option. I'm going to keep looking around.
