Need one or several devices?

I've got several needs and I'm looking for solution recommendations.

1. I work out a lot and it's getting pretty boring being without my own music when at the gym, outdoors, or even at home. Should be protable enough that I can easily operate it while working out. Must support music, playlists, shuffling, etc. Videos, images, and others not required.

2. I'm a student and I do a lot of reading, so I liberally use the read out loud feature in adobe reader. But I'd like to be able to use this anywhere similar to an mp3 player. Must support pdf.

3. I do a lot of traveling and driving, and I'm contantly needing street directions, points of interest, alternate routes, traffic conditions, etc. Mostly out in the open except when I step into a house or vehicle. I don't venture much into the tall cities, so tall buildings aren't really a concern.

4. I attend a lot of meetings, speeches, lectures, so I take a lot of notes. I would like something that digitally records this so I can review it later.

5. Just like everyone today, you can't operate without a phone. I currently only use it to talk, check the time, schedule, wake me up, calculate, etc.

I realize an all in one solution will probably never exist or it will be a jack of all trades, so this can be multiple devices, but I'd hate to carry around an ipod, pocketpc, GPS, digital recorder, and a phone at the same time.

In my opinion you have 3 choices.

1. The all-in-one device.

Unfortunately there isn't too much choice here. The only phone with gps that would make a decent music player is the Nokia N95. Most of the other options are just too big or don't have the music functionality. Now the N95 will display pdf files but I don't think it will read them out loud.

2. The everything except music device.

If you go this route you'll have several decent phones to choose from. To name a few the HTC P3300, HTC P3600, and Eten X500.

3. The everything except gps device.

If you go with this option you'll have the most choices. Basically, any smartphone with decent music functionallity would work.
