Long story short.. I'm considering about purchasing a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer as a first car that has 59k miles on it for a good price since I know the current owner. I've been looking around on the web.. and realized that the transmission seems to be a reoccuring problem on the Mountaineer and has gotten sour reviews because of it. Otherwise, I see nothing else wrong with it, really. So my question to everybody is: should I take the risk?

Additional information:
Never been in an accident; idk whether or not the car is a V6 or a V8; I would hope to use this car through college if I get it.

The mountaineer is the exact same as the Ford Explorer, just fewer were made under the "Mercury" nameplate...so with that info you should know it is one of the most UNreliable cars made.

heres the proof!

It's a Ford Explorer in disguise, has a few extra enhancements.
They ride nice, good power and the motors are known to last a very long time, with regular maintenance of course.
as for the transmission, yes they aren't the most positive thing in the Explorers, however, if you have the transmission fluid changed and flushed regularly, like every 2 years you really shouldn't have any problems.
