I consider myself a pretty good photographer. But, one of the main challenges I am yet to overcome is dealing with harsh shadows produced by direct sunlight when shooting outdoor portraits and model photography.
Obviously, certain times of the day are better than others as well as the beneficial side of having an overcast day for example. And, of course, settings in the shade help too.
However, if I simply don't have the option of these benefits and have to shoot in harsh light, in say the mid-afternoon where there are no shady areas available, what can I do to neutralize the harsh shadows as much as possible to get a softer, cleaner result?
