Need help with ongoing Scrabble game?

Me and my husband are in the middle of a Scrabble game. It is his turn, he is trying to put an S on an existing word and then trying to make another word. It goes like this
existing word in ()

h
so he put the S on vile and then put UCH under it. Can he do this?
