It was a made-4-tv movie. In this they had a ship made with a drill in front and would drill thru stone etc... the captain's uncle went years earlier to do the same and never returned- they run into him near the end of the movie but not knowing who each other was escaped from him and was left wide open for a sequel but never was one
I wish i could remember more of the movie
it was not any of the journey to the center of the earth movies and I think may have been mid to late 90's to early 2000
