Need Help With My Son

Hi guys, I'm new to the discussion board obviously. I'm just trying to figure out what's wrong with my 17 year old son since the doctors are just throwing labels around. Border line Bi Polar, schizo affective, and so on.

He complained of hearing voices "a crowd talking all at once" and had really scary visions of walking into our home and finding us all "slaughtered" as well as seeing his little brother crying (who he loves dearly) and cutting his throat among other things.

We've had him in treatment for depression and He tried to take his life back in Dec. of last year. We had put him in a local treatment center here and they only kept him like 7 days. They started him on Lexi pro where he had really bad side affects. Then they tried Abillify(sp)and had even worse results. Then they tried him on ceriquil (sp) which took care of the voices and visions but made him even more depressed.

So my wife took him to his appointment with his psychiatrist and my son told him that now he has a plan of how to kill himself and do it right this time. The Doctor recommended that we put him back into the treatment center where he is now. The same place he was before.

No one seems to know what's wrong with him. He has suicidal thoughts everyday. They can't figure out how to treat the depression which just baffles me.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Tim

Is your son seeing a therapist for regular 50-minute sessions to talk about things--or is he just getting medication? Treating with medication alone is not effective. He definitely sounds like he needs some intensive therapy. Regarding the medications, it is quite normal that they have to try different things in order to "get it right" since different meds work differently on everyone. If he's bi-polar or even borderline bi-polar I'm surprised they'd put him on a typical anti-depressant like Lexapro or Abilify. THese are antidepressents. Lexapro is an SSRI. Have you asked them about mood stabilizers like lithium and/or lamyctal? I have DEEP depressive episodes and regular SSRIs like lexapro do nothing. But Lithium is an AMAZING drug that kicks me out of the episodes. It is a mood stabilizer that has been used for decades and I think there is nothing like it. Now, that's just my experience. You might ask the psychiatrist and if they are not open, maybe get a second opinion.

best of everything.

Yes he does go to both a therapist (once a week) and a Psychiatrist once a month.

I didn't think that doctors could prescribe Lithium to anyone that young. I mean he is 17 but won't that mess up his kidney's when he gets older or something like that?

Thank you VERY much for your reply. It was very informative and helpful.
