I have a mini bike which I cannot get started. It started when I first got it, about 2 weeks ago but now I cannot get it started. The spark plug is clean and has spark (I checked it). The air filter is clean and new, the pull cord broke when I was trying to start it but I bought a brand new one and put it on but still can't get it to start. It's a 4-HP Tecumseh engine with a primer button, even when I press it 4-5 times it wont start. The engine has good compression (blows my thumb off the spark plug hole) but even with starting fluid or a few drops of gas into the spark plug hole, it won't start. I feel air blowing out of the muffler when I pull the cord but nothing. I opened up the carb but didn't want to mess with it too much and lose a small piece and be totally out of luck... It didn't look too bad. If I tried to clean the carb out do I need to adjust the float? All the gaskets seem to be in good shape, and I blew everything out with compressed air and cleaned the outside of the engine. The bike has a stop button, could this be stuck or something? I consider myself an amateur mechanic, but I hate the idea of trying to fix the carb and end up breaking it. What could I do to try to start the engine? It has plenty of clean new gas, the oil looks fresh. The previous owner also told me he put 10W-40 motor oil in the engine, this didn't seem right to me. So all in all, I checked the obvious things, what could I try next to get it started?
