Need help with fixing bicycle?

It it a mountain bike. When I am cycling it, the gear just randomly change. And say I shift it up one gear, the gears don't change, so I have to put it up say another one, and then it would go up three...

I know it has something to do with the restrictor, but if I change it I will screw it up even more. How do I know the default place which the restrictor is ment to sit in?

First of all it is not a restrictor" as you call it it is a Derailleur....it is out of adjustment and very likely needs the barrel adjuster turned a little bit to bring it back into alignment and everything will be alright again. see here: http://sheldonbrown.com/derailer-adjustment.html to get it right. Not everyone can do this the first time on their own as it does take some practice but with a little patience you will get it. DO NOT use Pliers on your Derailleur!!!

flip bike upside down on the handlebars and seat. set the front derailler lever to the 1st gear, loosen the nut that holds the cable to the derailler arm and with some pliers pull and set the arm to match the 1st gear. then tighten in position. You may have to loosen the 2 lil screws on the derailler arm- they just are backstops that prevent the arm from traveling too far. loosen them, do the above step, then slowly screw the right one until you see the arm barely start to move. repeat for the higher gear, then the rear gears... If your bike has quick adjust on the cables- (nuts attached to your cables usually right off the levers) just messing with them sometimes helps.
