need help with distortion pedals?

i'll come right out with it, i'm a total noob with distortion pedals, and i have no idea in what to look for. i need all the help and direction i can get in what's a good pedal, brand, Model, what to look for, anything. any help on what i should get will be appreciated. btw if it helps i play anything from soft rock to hardcore heavy metal. but i am looking for the pedal for when i try stuff from hard rock, to heavy metal. plz help
