Need Help with a t-mobile phone?

My Dad has a t-mobile phone ..he used to have a flex account with t-mobile.but recently switched to the Metro-PCS company . he wants to give me his old phone.i was wondering if i can make his old phone prepaid..do i have to get a new sim or do i just get a t-mobile prepaid card??
