MY mother who is 50 years old is suffering from c5 c6 disc degenartion and severe pain on the lateral side of the left arm..she has a history of type2 diabetes...she is prescribed prednisone 40 mg 8 per day for 5 days....My question is that is it safe to give prednisone to a diabetic patient...or is there any other way of treament other then surgery....

who is actually managing her overall care and pain at this point, her primary? has she consulted with at least a neurosurgeon to see what options she has in possibly treating this pain/disc issues? pred in my opinion, and alot of others is just a really'crappy' med that also lowers you ability to just fight off infections. its one of those meds that if you absolutely do not have to be on it,you are much better off. she is also on avery high dosage amount too. whether you are a diabetic or not,it is just not a great drug to have to be on if there are other options. and in her case, there are other options. hopefully they wont put her past the five days. i think they are trying at this point just to help lower the overall inflammation and see what happens. just make certain she does not stay on this med past the five days.

the one thing that i really do need to know here tho,is just what is the extent of her disc issues? do you have access to her MRI that was done at all? if you could possibly just type out what that very end of her report states in that "summary' at the end where they highlight the hard findings,it would help me tons to give you the best possible advice.
