Need help on college portfolio...?

I'm planning on going to college and majoring in graphic design and/or computer graphics (i still dont no what the difference is) I'm making a portfolio on both photoshop and gimp but i dont no what pictures to put in my portfolio. I no i have to draw atleast 5 pictures but other than that i have no idea what to put in. do you think i can put some of my imvu avatar pics i design in it? or should i put different styles of text I made in my portfolio? please help im so lost >__<
