NEED HELP: Nokia Joystick Problem (E61, etc.)

Today I encountered my most disturbing problem to-date with my Nokia e61. This after experiencing (and thankfully conquering) the dreaded backlight failure issue.

Basically, without any trauma involved (no dropping, hitting, etc. the phone was in my pocket while I was walking) the joystick has effectively stopped working properly!

To give you an idea of how bad things are just imagine this:

1) when you press down on the joystick (to choose an option) nothing happens
2) when you press it left/right/up/down it does not respond by going the corresponding direction, instead...
3) if there is a menu, it automatically scrolls continously through the menu options without stopping!
4) it does this even if you don't press the joystick...if there is a menu to choose from it automatically starts to scroll through all the options without obeying any joystick commands.

So imagine just walking down the road with your phone in your pocket, then all of a sudden without warning the joystick stops responding correctly and it's like a 'ghost' in the menu options.

What I've done so far:

1) I tried to reinstall the newest firmware. Unfortunately, I can only get so far before it says "Updater Failed". The first time, the screen of the phone had some message saying "Test" with a weird sequence of numbers at the top. Subsequent tries (about 6 in all have proven unsuccessful)

2) Hard Reset (*#7370#)

3) As per some instructions on this site, I tried the SEND, #, * (or 3...can't recall) then powering on to format/ resotre orinigal settings to no avail either.

4) Don't tell anyone, but a few crisp 'love taps' didn't yield good results.

I have not opened it as yet as I don't have a handy torx screw handy.

Any ideas are appreicated/
