When I was a kid I remember getting this spooky book from my library. It's been so long I have no clue of the title. I just remember bits and pieces of what it's about.
Basically I remember the setting was this big old mansion surrounded by marshes (the marshes had a name in the book but I don't remember it it was "marshes", "swamp", "bog", etc.). Anyway the marshes were considered dangerous. The owner of the mansion had supposedly lost his son to the marshes years ago. The owner lives in his mansion with his daughter who is secretly friends with a servant boy who is her own age. The servant boy is not treated well by the butler.
Somewhere in the middle of the story are parts about a big ferocious dog in the marshes. And a woman who is the town gossip who sees a vision of her dead husband's ghost.
Towards the end of the book the servant boy and the mansion owner's daughter run away into the marshes. I think they see skeletons coming out of the mud (but I believe it's just a hallucination due to swamp gas). They find a cabin where a young man cares for them. He turns out to be the mansion owner's son who didn't actually die but has been living there ever since he disappeared.
