Your first mistake was going to the dealer for a non warranty repair. If you can't do it, take it to an indy shop for a much better price.

yeah I can see that. they've dealt fairly with me in the past but a call to thier parts dept says reg is 198.00 and stator is 142.00 and that leaves a whooooooooole lotta distance to a grand. ive got a repair manual and it doesnt seem that hard from what im raedin. if they test bad i think ill b turning some wrenches myself.ill see what Zanotti's gets for em.

Relli, (and others that are interested)

I've wanted to post this a week or two ago but haven't had time.

I've been hassling with Voltage problems for a long time but finally found out the problem. God this drove me nuts.
To make a (real) long story short you need to check the plug
(Deutsch connector) that comes off the Regulator and runs down along the bottom frame (right side) and goes to (not even sure) maybe someone can tell me. Maybe the battery.
Anyway this is what the connector looks like. Mine was not getting a good connection so I cut it out entirely and just soldered in some 10G wire in its place. My Voltage has never been more steady or as high as she is now.
I know.. if I ever had to change the regulator then what...
I'll just UN solder it and REsolder it. It works great!

Check that connector real good. The wire going in was sooo hot on the one side and the other side was fine which alerted me to the problem finally. Worth a look!

I could use a simple fix i tell ya. if the stator is bad ill not tackle that after seeing the pics from the above post. didnt understand all that was involved. and i live by Clint's advice " a man has got to kinow his limitations". I was a wrench for much of my life but health problems curtailed that. been in mngt many years and lost sight in one eye4. think i can handle anything there BUT the stator. lets hope small prob or reg at worst. LOL

9 times out of 10 you can tell if the stator is bad by cracking the derby cover. If the stator shorts, it makes the primary stink like nothing you've ever smelt. There are checks you can do to check if it's the stator or regulator, using a volt/ohm meter, do a search on this site, and you should be able to find them. When my regulator took a dump, I ended up getting a Cycle Electrics regulator, instead of the OEM one. For about the same price has twice the warranty.
But first check your battery, check all connections and make sure they are clean, a can of contact cleaner and a tube of dielectric grease is pretty cheap. Use a volt meter on the battery terminals and compare against the fairing meter. if those match, and it's still low, check your regulator and stator.

heres a question. if it gets to the point where i think i may have to tow it in to someone would I hurt anything by putting a voltage reg on it IF the stator is bad? will I have damaged the new reg?

Relli,
Did you look at that connector yet? Mine baffled me for months!
I even went so far as to to get a new voltage regulator 7 months ago and still had the problem until I found this connector bad!
Your complaining about some simple fixes!!
Then check this connector! Takes five minutes.
Take it apart, spray it out with some contact cleaner and plug it back together! See if anything happens!
Otherwise, the hell with you...
