Domestic text (The USA) should not be a problem with texting your friend, and no cost to you or them other than if you go over your texting allowances.
Only time you have to worry about texting other people, is if they live in another country, which would fall under International texting and cost you to send and receive text, unless you happen to add an international texting plan to you account.
