First off, man oh man oh man, that is a tough road, i really wish you well.
I don't know if this will help but i sure wish i knew this at 16 versus figuring it out on my own at 35 years of age.

now, of course everyone has different ways of handling there struggles, mainly, avoiding them, competeting with them, deny them, or the best way learning and growing.
From a logical standpoint it seems it's a behavior issue that has gotten ingrained a tad
U get a stimulus, your brain process whatever, and the reaction, which in the past you handled okay emotionally is now apparently physical
no doubt it is a sucky place to be, yet, the good news is this is pretty basic physchological stuff for the most part, so some professional help, one on one in person is the best path, try not to be afraid and look at it as a learning expereince
there is folks out there with knowledge and expereince in this stuff waiting to help u
