need help buying bike tyres please.?

Hey, I have a Scott Aspect 2008 bike, and have never needed to replace tyres befor as I'm quite new to MTB, and I was wondering, as my bike currently has scott ozon tyres that are 26"x2.0, and I wondered whether it mattered if the new tyres were wider or narrower than the old ones as obviously they need to be 26" but do they need to be the same width as the old ones?
