Need help before buying. 748 or 749?

Okay well here is the rundown. I've been in the market for a 748/9 for about two months and now that I am very close to buying one I would like some advice.

What kind of advantages does the 749 have over the 48? Not really asking about power advantages more along the lines of mechanical. In general will I have less problems with similar mileage bikes with the 749?

My problem is I personally like the 748 better in a looks comparison but it's not enough to win a debate if one of the bikes is a better built bike.

Any help you guys can give is really appreciated. Also any tips on what to look for on the bikes before making a purchase would be helpful too. Thanks.

Oh and one more thing, my local Ducati shop was telling me that they recommend 7500 mile checkups not the 6000 mile that I have heard from most of the board. Any reason behind this? They also quoted the service to around $700. That seem fair?
 
service prices are really variable. Chech around if you have more than one shop to chose from. What year 749? I too like the 748 better, but from a mechanical standpoint the 749 was the most final version of that generation of bike. Learned a lot from early 999's that was applied to the last year 749's. What year?
 
Personally, I would rock the 998. But I am more fond of that generation. From a mechanical standpoint,as I said, the 749 is gonna be a jump forward, and should be more reliable long term. yeah, and just look in the 848 forum to see how reliable these are being.

Maybe the cleanest one? Are they all bone stock? Have any seen track time or been down? What is the service record on each bike? What kind of experience do the current owners have? That speaks a lot as to why they may be selling, and what kind of life the engine has seen.

Yeah. 998 for me if all that is close. Red??
 
as52, Having two 2002 998s models and a 2003 749 and not knowing your riding skill level or your sole purpose for the bike I will try to give you a realistic opinion. If you are looking to carve the canyons and have a bike just for fun I am with azmcs "Rock the 998". If you are looking for playing in the canyon and having the "classic DUCATI superbike look" without being too rediculous then get the 748. If you are going to carve the canyons and use the bike for "casual" riding and want an all around superbike the 749 is best choice, I feel it is the most foregiving and also a little more comfy to ride, meaning your not leaning over the tank all the time. Very hard choice I Love my 1098s Tricolore as well but for some reason the throttle controls me . Have you considered an 848 It has the best of all worlds and is a mixture of all 3 bikes. Hope this helps.
