Need Ford Ranger help?

I have an 01' Ford Ranger that is making a growling/rattling sound right about when I need to shift gears. It sounds like it's coming from underneath the truck. I seems to go away completely after a few minutes of driving. Any knowledge before I take it to a mechanic would be great!
It doesn't make this sound unless I'm driving. Could it be something in the exhaust?

this sounds like the thrust bearing.
this bearing pushes the clutchplate free from the flywheel when you apply pressure to the clutch.
when it,s worn it will make noises like you describe.
if your mechanick confirms this then it,s
best to replace it with the whole clutch.
check when the engine is running and you push the clutch pedal in if it will make this noise.
