Need car buying suggestions between Toyota, Honda, Mazda and Ford?

Hi,
We are planning to finance a new car. Our choices has been cut down to these four cars.

1) Honda Civic 09
2) Ford Focus 09
3) Mazda3 2010
4) Toyota Corolla 2010

We are focusing on durability and space. Some of my friends are telling us that we should go for Toyota or Honda since they are reliable than any others. However, others are telling us that Ford has redesigned everything and we should go for Ford. Couple of weeks back I drove a Ford Focus 09 and the performance was amazing, moreover, it was spacious too. However, I did not find Honda Civic that spacious.

So, we're stuck in a middle. If all Japanese engines are good then what's wrong with Mazda? I heard that maintenance cost is high for Mazda. Is it true?

We would really appreciate any advice. Actually we want a durable, less maintenance car as well as spacious.

mazda 3 myself
but toyotas last well and corollas great car lack of boot space tho unless u get the verso

ford= Found.On.Road.Dead
civic erm erm ugly

MAZDA 3 ALL THE WAY SEXY SEXY SEXY EXCELLENT DURABILITY

Focus has been the best selling car in the World! Nobody told you that? Doesn't the Focus still come with a 100,000 mile powertrain warranty? What do the Japs offer?
Ford owns a good percentage of Mazda.
Consider service. Every garage in America can work on Fords & get parts within a day. If you're in BFE, do you want to risk spending a month waiting on parts?

If performance and space are your biggest sticking points, I'd go with the Mazda. They are excellent performers, and have a larger interior. I'm not sure where you heard that Mazdas are not reliable, but let me assure you that is not the case. Their predicted reliability, according to consumer reports, is just as good as the Civic or Corolla. While the Civic is the best of the bunch overall, I agree with you that they are somewhat limited in overall space. Here is a little sample of what consumer reports says about the Mazda....

"The Mazda3 is a very pleasant, practical, fun-to-drive small car. The 2.0-liter engine is relatively quick and sparing with fuel. We got 30 mpg overall with the manual transmission. The 2.3-liter is punchy. Handling is precise and responsive, and the ride is firm and comfortable, though road noise is pronounced. Interior quality is very good. The rear-seat room is competitive in this class, but the sedan's trunk is a bit small. The hatchback increases versatility. The sportier Mazdaspeed version has a 263-hp engine. Electronic stability control is included on some trim lines. Curtain air bags are standard. A freshened 2010 Mazda3 is now on sale".
