How can i check to see if i need a fuel pump relay and not a pump? dont know much about cars and its a 96 suburban
There is no noise when I turn the key forwards
it cut off while i was trying to park.

With key in on position (not running) should be able to hear the fuel pump run. Use a test light for current flow in the fuses and in and out of the relay or fuel pump.

Typically the relays are all together under the hood and most of them interchange,I would take the one from the headlight circuit or any non essential circuit and switch the two and try again if no change it's not the relay if it does then you've discovered the problem.

On the firewall behind a black plastic cover is the fuel pump relay and fuse (to the left)

Check the fuse,and relay.
If you turn the key to "on", the relay should activate for two seconds, then shut off.

If you tend to drive with less than 1/4 tank of gas, you probably need a new fuel pump.
