Need advice on a good quality pillow for the tailbone

My sister has a disc pressing on the nerves near the tailbone. Surgery is not an option, so she has to deal with constant pain. She can sit for only a short time, so can't work and is on disability. She tried one of those donut pillows, but it kept slipping, so was of no use. I want to buy her a good quality pillow that will stay put and, hopefully, help eliminate her pain. Can someone recommend one or several pillows. I don't mind paying up to $50.

I too have suffered from disc herniation pain that results in severe tailbone pain. I have 2 types of pillows that I use to enable me sit for longer than 20 or so minutes. One is the "donut pillow" that you mentioned however, I went to the fabric store and purchased a synthetic larabs wool fabric that I cut and covered and glued to the rubber donut. It works quite well and no longer slips out from under me. The only drawback is in very hot weather (100+ degrees it can get too warm). The other type is a "memory foam" pillow much like the tempurpedic that again I modified by cutting out a five inch square for my tailbone. It has worked wonders and at least for me does not slip around. I wish I could afford to have several, but am happy with having this one especially for driving and computer use.

I too had severe tailbone pain that felt worse than when I passed kidney stones. I coudn't sit for more than 15 minutes on good days, and most of the time not at all. It hurt to sit down and hurt to get up. I did find a cushion that helped me sit longer but it cost around $125 dollars. It was made of that same foam they make the tempurpedic mattresses out of as konagirl222 mentioned, except mine has a cutout that I can remove for the tailbone. I didn't remove it as it feels fine the way it is. I tried 4 different pillows to find this one and it was the only one that helped. I know it is a lot more than what you said you would pay, but it was the only one I found that helped.

I went to an anesthesiologist who gave me a shot in the tailbone or a steroid and that helped tremendously and is very managable now. Not sure if that would help your sister or not.
