Hi: have had asthma for 25 years; i now have good control on Flovent, 2 puRAB per day and rescue med as needed (until this past month didn't need more than 1 or 2 puRAB per week); this past month we are in Florida and I develped a constant cough; don['t know if this is from allergy or a virus; i also have developed laryngitis. anyway, I increased Flovent to 4 puRAB per day and taking about 6 puRAB HFA Proventil per day ( by the way I miss the old inhaler-sigh); anyway, I always travel with prednisone tablets to take in case i get into trouble. My peak flow meter function has not gone down. So i am debating as to whether I should take the Pred pills, which I don't like to take until absolutely necessary but this cough is making me nuts; I thought about seeing a pulmonologist here in Florida but i gotta tell ya, from my limited experience, I don't prefer these Florida docs; i would rather wait till i get back to my doc in Michigan but that is 2 weeks away. Any advice is very much appreciated. Have a great

Is your chest tight ..if so taking the pred might be a good option till you get to the doctor.

If your cough isn't under control and it is part of your established asthma plan, you should certainly take the Prednisone. If you aren't feeling it is an emergency and you have the Prednisone as part of your normal treatment, you should look at following that. If it gets to the point that you don't feel it is under control enough, please seek emergency care.

My Pulmonologist has given me a standing prescription for antibiotics and Prednisone. He said that I know my body and should be able to start my own treatment without having to wait for an appointment to begin it.

My peak flow doesn't always give me a true sense of my asthma when I have the chronic coughing either. Just be aware of your body.

Obviously, you know your body and have the prescription available. If you are feeling like you need it, you probably do.
