Would it be okay to go to a general surgeon for an upper endoscopy? Are they capable of handling stomach issues like a gastroenterologist would be?
I ask because I'm thinking of going back to the general surgeon that removed my gallbladder in Deceraber. Was supposed to have an appointment Tuesday with a gastroenterologist but she was called to the hospital due to an emergency. Now it's another 3 weeks before I can get an appointment. I had been to her one time in March but my symptoms had eased up some so we decided to wait before ordering tests. Things have been crazy since that time. When I called back it took 3 weeks to get another appointment, just to schedule the EGD, but like I said, it was cancelled.
Back in Noveraber when I first went to my primary care doctor, he referred me to this same surgeon because he thought I needed an upper endoscopy. Never went to him for that reason because an ultrasound revealed a gallstone but I did go to him for the gallbladder surgery. I like him better than the gastroenterologist and I can get an appoinment a week sooner with him. If anyone cancels in the meantime they will call me. As for the gastro doc you would think they would work me in sooner since they cancelled the appointment but no, 3 weeks!
Has anyone else been to a general surgeon for an upper endoscopy? Even though I really want to find out what's going on as quickly as possible, should I try to wait for the gastro doc appointment?
I'm experiencing abdominal tenderness, burping, hiccups everyday. Also having bouts of back achiness and chest discomfort. Even my throat is irritated which my primary care doc thinks might be due to acid reflux. Have had a few weird experiences after eating/drinking recently. Drank a glass of water somewhat quickly and not only my stomach, but my shoulders started aching. Have had my upper back and even the back of my neck ache after eating. Also, got a bad cramp in the center of my back after consuming just one alcoholic beverage. Currently taking Prevacid but it doesn't seem to be helping.
