carburetor...? The mechanic I have taken the car to for repairs is an honest guy (in the past) but he told me he doesn't know how to rebuild a carburetor (this may be true) and claims he cannot find a rebuilt one to fit the engine of this car. He also said my gas tank is shot and that he cannot even flush the gas line. He said 'bad gas' sat in the tank, line and ultimately the carburetor too long. This makes sense to me and yes, this is ultimately ALL my fault. I wonder if he is aware that a 1986 Honda Civic DX has two gas filters on the gas line and if this would make a difference while flushing the line out.
My impression is that he doesn't want to fool with working on my car because he personally feels it is not a car WORTH fooling with. I have owned this car since it was built, no one else has ever even driven it and I also notice that it seems popular with people who like to modify vintage cars. All I want for a start is to replace the carburetor and see what's wrong with the gas line and tank. I HAVE called around to a few mechanics asking if they rebuild carburetors and the answer is always "NO!"
The current mechanic called and told me some guy he knows wanted to buy it for $300 and I am not sure I want to give up on this car. I figure the guy who wants to buy it wants to restore it as it has an unblemished body, new tires, and new suspension and has been driven for 24 years with very few problems and up until now, before I neglected it, babied by me.
So what advice and/or knowledge do any of you guys/girls who know cars have for me?
I do have a cousin who is a mechanic but he lives 150 miles away and to tow it there would probably be cost prohibitive. Do you think towing the car to my cousin would be worth the trouble in the long run? And speaking of cost, about how much would it cost to just replace the engine in this car (1986 Honda Civic DX) with a more powerful one that will FIT under the hood (as the space is small).
I would greatly appreciate any input...THANKS!
