Hi,
I’m a technician in a small group of a large state research company and I would like to start applying for new jobs while in my old job. Problem is I don’t want my managers to know I’m job hunting, as the process could still take many months, but I need them as referees. I have been in this job the entire 7 years since I graduated so don’t have many other options for recent/relevant referees.
Our group is having funding problems and it’s unlikely there will be jobs for any of us past the next 12 months anyway, so I imagine managers can see this coming. But that’s not to say they will be happy about it, as my leaving will lessen the chances of our group’s survival even further.
The main reason for me wanting to leave, however, is that I am intensely bored with research work and would like to move into something different - AND better paid! Science over here barely pays bills…
Attending interviews is no problem – we have liberal work hours. But we have to give 4 weeks not
