Need a new computer in my 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo does the key have a chip that

needs to match? My mechanic said i needed a new computer but he said that there is a chip in the key that needs to match the computer or it wont run for more than a few seconds. Is this true? Or is he full of it? This will make it hard to get from a junkyard the key and the computer. Im not paying 800 for one from the dealer.
