Twilight is a preteen novel lacking in any gothic undertones or adult romance at all, as can be said about pretty much anything to do with vampires these days. Not that I hate vampires, I just really love dark romance (and Twilight is not included in this genre).
I want to find novels like the original Phantom of the Opera or Frankenstein, in which there is a kind of monster who falls in love or desires love (or something of the sort). It doesn't have to be so specific, but I'd really like some gothic romance. Thanks.
I just said vampire novels these days are crap. The Vampire Diaries is NOT a gothic series you moron.
The Vampire Diaries or Vampire Academy.
Fallen is not gothic. Jesus don't you people research your own books? Just because it has monsters or darkness or whatever in it doesn't mean the plot or atmosphere is dark.
@Baraah: Are you f u cking stupid? Really?

These aren't necessarily about the monster who falls in love, but they are a good place to start if your interested in classic gothic literature.

- Camilla by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu
- Dracula by Bram Stoker
- Anything by H.P. Lovecraft
- Anything by Edgar Allan Poe
- The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson
- Dragonwyk by Anya Seton
- The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson
- The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde

The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova is kind of a modern retelling of Dracula. I don't want to give away the ending, I really wasn't sure what to expect, and that's something I really liked about the book. There's no trashy teenage romance, and it does get kind of spooky at times, there's a good level of tension running throughout.

Fallen by Lauren Kate.

Description-

Luce is a new student at Sword & Cross, an unwelcoming boarding/reform school in Savannah, Georgia. Luce's boyfriend died under suspicious circumstances, and now she carries the guilt over his death with her as she navigates the unfriendly halls at Sword & Cross. There's something achingly familiar about Daniel Grigori.

Mysterious and aloof, he captures Luce Price's attention from the moment she sees him on her first day at the Sword & Cross boarding school in sultry Savannah, Georgia. He's the one bright spot in a place where cell phones are forbidden, the other students are all screw-ups, and security cameras watch every move.

Even though Daniel wants nothing to do with Luce--and goes out of his way to make that very clear--she can't let it go. Drawn to him like a moth to a flame, she has to find out what Daniel is so desperate to keep secret . . . even if it kills her.

Dangerously exciting and darkly romantic, Fallen is a page turning thriller and the ultimate love story.
