I have had back pain for years. Recently (within the last 6 months) my middle back pain has been getting progressively worse and it is now affecting my life. My doctor referred me to PT and I will be going over the course of a few months. The only diagnostic that my PCP had done was an X-ray which they didn't even get the part of my back that has the most pain. I know I have joint hypermobility and my joints pop all the time. I have knee pain and other pain but my back is really what is affecting me. My PCP has given me 20 vicodin per week for the last 3 weeks. No refills. Each week I have to call and have it authorized. She said today I am using it more than she expected. 3 per day is not excessive. She just doesn't get how much pain I'm actually in. I dont know if I need to see a certain kind of specialist. I dont know if I need her referral. Should I call a specialist on my own? If so what kind? Should I see a different PCP? I really need one who will listen to me but I dont know who to call.

It depenRAB on what hkind of insurance you have. If you have an HMO, you will need to get a referral from you PCP to see anyone else. If you have a PPO you can make the appointment yourself. You need to see a good back doctor to find out what is going on. If you know of anyone who has used a back doc, ask them. Or ask your local pharmacist who they would recommend. A good back doc will get to the root of your problem and get you on the right meRAB and the right routine to heal.

good luck.
