n73 voice dialing wtf?

Ok so I looked in the manual and it says theres supposed to be a "play voice tag" under options for that contact card. Well, there isnt. Ive found it before on random occasion but not Im not sure if it was under the old firmware. The problem is, this thing cant understand a single word I say. How hard is it to understand "Mom"? You can only say that persons name with so many accents.

Secondly, it seems to decide whatever it wants to put as the voice tag. I have it say the callers name during calls but it seems to say either the persons last name or nick name, not their first name. Some people actually get their whole name spoken.

Is there any way to go in and (re)set these?
 
you can reset voice adaptions under the voice command menu, but i'm not sure if it'll make a huge difference. i have the same problem, most frustratingly for the same tag..."mom". when it does work, i can't even understand what it says for the word "mom". i'm not sure if the tag is TOO simple, and it can't decide what you're trying to say...i haven't tried "mother" or anything else like that.
 
I believe you have to say "mum" for Mom.

To play a voice tag, open the contact, highlight the number with the voice tag symbol on it, Options>Play Voice Tag. It should give you an idea of what your phone expects you to say, and it should always read the entire name.

I found the way to play the voice command. You have to go to the number with the little pacman face next to it and then hit options. From there you will see "play voice command". The only problem is I cant change which name the voice command uses. I dont want nicknames chosen(I have that set for peoples screen names) I want it to say and use their first and last names.

I cant find where under the voice commands menu I can adapt it to anything. It just gives me the options for changing profile voices, bluetooth, camera, recorder etc.
 
Yeah this went just great. Reset my settings and went to try it again and the phone threw up the white screen with Nokia on it. Froze all to hell. Doing a reset as we speak.

Edit: Does it each time now. Voice command just took a dump. When I try to do any voice command the phone freezes up. WTF!!!
 
I dont even get to say anything. It happens immediately upon hitting voice command prompt from my headset. It does the little sound and then the phone turns off and restarts. This is entirely frustrating.
 
Just tried backing up, resetting phone and restoring it to no effect. Still restarts itself each time the voice command prompt is hit. Oh well, I couldnt get the voice dialing to work in the first place, guess I dont need it now.
 
What firmware are you running? Maybe you can kill two birds with one stone by updating your firmware and resetting your phone to defaults.
 
actually I've found that Nokia's voice dialling software isn't really good with single-syllable names. Mother would work better than Mom. I have "Drew" in there and it never gets it right. Changed it to Drewbert and we're golden.

I use full names (first last) in my contacts, and voice dialing works pretty well for me with my BT HS. Rcadden may be onto something, longer names give it a better chance for hearing what you really wanted it to. However, I still find myself using Alon's contact guide more for finding and dialing.
